When we jump to the next area, a rock falls and plugs the hole we came from.

A big, open sewer and another Mouser swarm. Just what we needed.

The second sewer tunnel gives us what the SNES manual called “Pizza Monsters” and this manual (as we’ll see later) calls “Sewer Mutants”. They’re clearly Alien xenomorphs and I remain shocked they made it past the lawyers.

It’s a mini-boss. It’s invulnerable while underwater, but will scratch you when you hit it as it pops up. Donny’s “longer reach” really gets you nothing here.
It drops a pizza when it dies, though.

These holes are filled with Mousers. You can actually jump-kick your way through the entire segment without taking a hit.

Just a little more tunnel and a scene transition until we get to the real boss.

Shredder! Who opens the battle with a cheap first strike.

He throws his SONIC BOOM, jogs across the battlefield, and does jump-kicks. Most of defeating him seems to just be learning his pattern. It’s easy enough to tag him with jump-kicks in between his attacks.

He jogs off when beaten.

And jumps on Krang’s little hover-girder. (Did Konami re-use them from Contra?)

Okay, so this bonus game: You see those spikes on the three higher platforms? Those are, in fact, spikes. Which slow you down and prevent you from collecting pizzas if you touch them. WTF.

I’m keeping Donny for Act 5.

We hang from the Turtle Blimp and jump off…yeah, this was totally stolen from Contra.

Of course, with Contra there was a slightly more coherent sense of where you were going and how to get there. Here, just guessing from the fact that I can’t go left and down is usually bad that I should go right and up.

But I keep seeing the same landmarks over and over again.

Foot soldiers and heli-drones infest the place. There’s a pizza here, but don’t ask me to find it again.

These triple guns shoot diamonds up.

These guns shoot missiles down.

Eventually the scrolling stops and you automatically jump down.

For a mini-boss fight with Baxter Stockman!

The second level actually makes this really easy. His blasts go forward instead of diagonally, but he also only takes a couple of hits before leaving.

Then you have to fight a room full of foot soldiers. Then there’s a pizza.

Then the real boss: The Stone Warrior!

He’ll try to flatten you and burn your head off.

He’s actually not so bad. You need to dodge his rolling ball form, but once he’s in humanoid form you can stand just below him (It’s a 3D screen) and you’ll be able to hit him, but his attack misses you. Just don’t try to stand just behind him, or the reverse will be true.

Once he’s defeated, April is saved!

And then we jump in a hole.

This bonus game is more reasonable—it has these two girder-platforms you need to hop onto and off of to collect the pizzas.

See you next time for the TMNT2 instruction manual!

TMNT gets a surprising amount of use out of xenomorphs, it must be said

I think those not-xenomorphs came from an episode of the cartoon - mutated from pizza? IIRC. But yeah they are pretty blatant.

Those cave backgrounds are excruciating. But the sewer tunnel background is nice. This game does have some well-drawn stuff, it's just pretty inconsistent.

As someone who still has this VHS kicking around his parents' barn somewhere, I can confirm that the pizza monsters are real, and they are my friends.

Is this the only TMNT game where you fight Baxter after you fight Shredder?

Let's recount:

TMNT (NES): No Baxter
TMNT II/Arcade Game: Fight baxter twice, sewer and highway stages
TMNT III: No Baxter
TMNT IV: Boss of Stage 1

Fall of the Foot Clan: Boss of Stage 3
Radical Rescue: No Baxter

Hyperstone Heist: Boss of Stage 4

All of those battles take place before Shredder, so I think we can say this one is unique...at least among early TMNT games. That I remember.

And that child suggesting getting your parents help to adjust the tracking.

Little did the produces know that because I was paying attention, I was the one who knew how the tracking knob worked! They gave me, a mere child, the sole owner of the power and knowledge on how to make VHS tapes legible for all the household!

Default Post #8 – TMNT2 Instruction Manual

And now, another look into the gold mine that is early-90s video game manuals.

Another awesome game from Konami!

I’m not going to argue about this “toughest battle” thing, actually. This game is pretty dang hard. And also, it didn’t seem like the Turtles were challenged all that much in the cartoon show, what with the insanely incompetent villains they were usually facing.

Aww, Shredder broke the missile button!

This page is LIES.

Note that while the word “Cowabunga” doesn’t really appear written in this game, the confirmation sound noted here is accurate.

…I should probably screencap a rescue stage, shouldn’t I?

This is all the details about the stages you’re given. Apparently coming up with silly names for stage level Acts two, five and six was too much trouble.

“Which characters do we have stock art of? We’ll just throw those in the manual.”

Hey, was that all? Lame! Next time I’ll finish the game!

Yes. They're called Pizza Monsters, and Krang and Shredder put their eggs on pizzas and try to get the turtles to eat them. Not coincidentally, their design is a reference to Alien.

I always thought it was odd that the Turtles in Time arcade game had two bosses who were complete one off monsters from the show. I believe there's a blobby monster created by a character (Baxter Stockman, I think) who possesses a helmet that works like the Cosmic Cube.

I didn't realize that was the end of the game. Granitor is such a weird, anticlimactic choice for a final boss.

I remember the FHE logo from Gumby videos, which always included a really terrifying trailer for the animated Rikki-Tikki-Tavi TV special.

Default Post #9 – TMNT2 Act Six and Ending

I’ll take Mikey to the final confrontation. Because why not?

Act 6 opens with a sewer-surfing segment that actually has no enemies, just mines and missiles.

The mines get more dense as the stage goes on, and then start popping up as you approach them. The missiles come in periodic waves, though at least you can hit those rather than just fruitlessly trying to dodge them.

Then we bounce into another cave segment.

Lasers!

Slide-kicking foot soldiers!

Holes full of Mousers! Accompanied by lasers!

(Some of these have a distinctly Kaizo feel to them. You need to jump to avoid the Mousers, but if you jump, the laser is in the perfect place to hit you.)

Hey, it’s the edge of the Technodrome! In we go!

In case you can’t tell, I’m on a conveyer belt that’s moving me to the right.

Stone Warrior V2 will be our miniboss for the evening. ("General Tragg" is his actual name, I think?)

This time, he’s on a 2D moving floor, so you need to jump his rolling rock form. Instead of the fire blast, this time he shoot three rounds rapid at you. In between those is your chance to strike.

In through the door to the next area.

Foot soldiers and automated defense cannons await us. You know, it occurs to me that part of the big jump in difficulty in this game was that in the first game, you could reflect or destroy most projectiles by attacking them. In this, you can’t—there’s only a select few that can be swatted away.

Roadkill Rodney makes his triumphant return, though now he takes only 1-2 hits to knock out.

In case you missed the “flame spouts and rocket launchers” segments, here’s another one.

And a pizza.

Then another “fight the foot in an elevator” sequence.

I feel like Turtles in Time really improved on the foot soldiers by giving them varying weapons and attack patterns.

Then we try to confront Krang, but get knocked down a few flights for our trouble.

Ouch. Who wants to bet this means another elevator ride is in our future?

Brief girder maze full of Mousers.

Then into the elevator to fight Shredder again. Once again, he’s clearly secondary to Krang in the villain hierarchy.

This time, he has a fast-slicing sword, and he can create dopplegangers to confuse you.

The next segment includes holes that zillions of heli-drones emerge from, foot soldiers stacked two high, and machine gun encampments that are very hard to dodge.

I do not like the idea of stage hazards that you can’t really see, can’t damage, and that can track you.

Then it’s off to fight Krang in his android suit.

Krang is a pain. His stomps freeze you in place, he doesn’t jump high enough for you to easily get under—you need to slide. Only his upper half is vulnerable, so all of your damage will be dealt by jump-kick.

Destroying his suit flings him back through the portal to Dimension X. Hey, have we every considered putting him in an Earth jail, rather than sending him back to the dimension he already conquered?

Also, defeating him destroys the Technodrome and saves the day. And the credits roll!

The cast roll is up first. Splinter is “Sir Barely Appearing In This Game.”
