The Adventure Zone takes a hot minute to get started but it really gets there in the end.

Listening to Adventure Zone while taking a walk today. Got to the first appearance Garyl, the Binicorn.

And I am reasonably sure at least one passing motorist must have thought I was having a seizure.

I just finished listening to the crystal kingdom arc. I started listening to The Adventure Zone a little over a week ago.

I've kind of fallen pretty deep into the McElroyverse here.

This is from my favorite episode of MBMBAM, and I love that the animator decided to briefly render it as a scene from Phoenix Wright.

I think the secret best thing about The Adventure Zone might just be Justin/Taako repeatedly finding hilarious workarounds for whatever bullshit Griffin throws at him.
  • Using the Wand of Switcheroo to easily win the Battle Wagon race
  • Trading the The Slicer of Tapeer-Wheer Isles for the Flaming Poisoning Raging Sword of Doom immediately after buying it
  • Using Change Appearance to completely mitigate his punishment in Wonderland in last night's episode

Taakos gradual shift from "super dumb" to "aloof self-interest" is another reason he's my favourite character.

But boy is Merle closing the gap.

I've been shotgunning The Adventure Zone for the past couple weeks, and while amazing, The Suffering Game has actually made me physically uncomfortable several times now and has hit the point where I as a player might actually say no, fuck you, I'm not playing this shit anymore. I'm not through the newest episode yet but I don't imagine that opinion is going to change!

Yeah, The Suffering Game has been very endgamey. Like, Griffin's been super lenient with making sure the Trés Horny Boys get through everything else fine before, but these characters aren't likely to be fit for much adventuring anymore by the end of this one.

holy shit I just realized Merle is Venom Snake now

I just caught up on The Adventure Zone, which, again, is NOT an eventuality I had envisioned when Car Boys introduced me to the work of The McElroys but short months ago.

Tefari:
The last episode of The Suffering Game is a bit of a respite. I have a feeling the Deus Ex Machinas are going to start popping in to produce a satisfying resolution.

Normally that would be a condemnation, but I kind of like Griffin's willingness to jump in and produce certain results. I think the boys are pretty good at realizing that they're not just playing D&D, they're producing a show using D&D as a medium. Griffin established stakes - now things are going to turn around.

After a couple of weeks of plowing through these episodes gluttonously, having to wait for an update is going to be kind of painful.

Oh yeah at first it drove me nuts that they were playing D&D incredibly badly and how Griffon would let them get away with dumb shit that even a lenient GM would scoff at, until I realized that playing well wasn't the point, the point was to be entertaining.

I don't think tres horny boys are getting out of this one in one piece. The stakes of the mission were established to hammer that point home I feel, and Griff isn't letting them get away with half their usual bullshit, I don't expect to see him intervene in any case but literal character death.

I'm not the only one who thinks Clint is mainly acting am I? He seems way too smart guy acting goofy and dumb.

Finally pushed through Greblins and yeah the show is starting to pick up. It's mostly because Mines of Phandelver is a terrible module right? Still, Griffin takes forever to describe everything.

Is D&D forever describing rooms?!

I thought the dragon to dungeon ratio was a little more ballanced

I mean it all depends on your DM's style. The official adventures always seem to lean heavily on narrating your surroundings in detail.

Wait until Crystal Kingdoms, when the party politely asks him to stop using the word "Crystal"

The release pace is such that I forget what's happening if I stay caught up, so I wait until entire arcs are finished and then shotgun them.

Which means that I just recently finished the 11th Hour/Refuge arc, which was a lot of fun, but I called pretty much every twist long before it happened (like, one or two episodes in), which was a bit disappointing.

I have yet to listen to the following interlude (it's on my MP3 player, just haven't arrived at it in the rotation yet), but if it doesn't turn out that all of that kvetching during Crystal Kingdom about the boys having died many many times in the past was not about their deaths in the time bubble, which put them several years in the past relative to the outside world, I'm going to be super disappointed. I kept waiting for that shoe to drop, and then it... didn't.

I mean, yeah. It also takes them a minute to find their characters and get past the awkward part of learning to let go of the fact that you're role playing. The story breaks from the module at like the second episode when they go straight to Wave Echo Cave and they meet the gauntlet.

Episode 2 also introduces Klargg and, if I'm being totally honest, he's the reason I stuck around more than two episodes.

Then it became Taako.

Then Taako and Merle.

It looks like the new replacement for Nuzlocke is a pacifist World of Warcraft run. Would not have been my first choice, but it looks like I can trust Griffin to elevate the material.

(Also, it looks like he'll be capturing lots of Pokémon anyway, so...)

...is it Clint that does the opening narration in the show proper as well? Because, except for the slight reverb that was bang-on and it never actually occurred to me to wonder who it is that informs babies they are cool and is dubious about Travis' sexpertise.

No, but he does it at the live shows. I don't remember who did the original MBMBAM one, I think it's someone from another MaxFun show.

The original is apparently a voice actor named Bob Ball. I don't think that's him on the show, though.
