Default Damien: The Popularity Contest #16 Poll

Here are the choices.

Top 50 Female Characters in Video Games - Positronic Brain
Top 50 Fruits and Vegetables - Johnny Unusual
Top 50 Horror Movies - Adrenaline
Top 50 Mario Characters/Enemies - Loki
Top 50 Mecha - Kirin
Top 50 Numbers -Bulgakov
Top 50 Pokemon -Yorin Trouble
Top 50 Saddest Songs - FalseLogic
Top 50 Sporting Contests - Ample Vigor
Top 50 Star Trek Episodes - Red Hedgehog (-1 anonymous)
Top 50 Video Games of the 21st Century - Issun (+1 anonymous)

NOW BEFORE YOU VOTE, PLEASE READ!

You can only vote for at most 3 topics. Unfortunately, you are on the dreaded honour system here because I needed to use straw poll.

Similarly, I am willing to re-allocate votes if you want to change them or add an extra one, but I might halt it if I get a whiff of malfeasance (am I using that word right?). I think I'm over thinking it, but I hate the idea of someone trying to game the system.

Anyway, the poll will be considered officially ended when I see it on Wednesday morning and announce the winner. If there's a tie, both will go and they can decide who can go first and second between them.

So in short:
- please vote for at most 3 topics
- you can change votes if you talk to me
- don't try to cheat, please.
- deadline is Tuesday or early Wednesday morning if you do it before I get up.

Am I missing anything?

OK, now go vote!

Objection! Strawpoll asks me to prove I'm not a robot before voting - this discrimination against automatons will not stand!

Oh man I really hope mine gets through this time. I've been thinking a lot about how it'd be put together.

Although if Star Trek finally won that'd be cool too.

Yeah, this is a tough one. Too much good stuff, need at least five+ votes. (Of course if I voted for everything I like it would pretty much change the rankings not at all...)

BTW, Johnny, maybe put the word "Voting" in the thread title somewhere? Almost missed it skimming the subforum this morning.

Besides my 21st Century games one and Star Trek I also voted for Saddest Songs, though it was a tough call between that and Sporting Events.

OK, I now have "poll" in the title, which I forgot before.

So here's my take on the topics. I think they are all good, though some are more for me than others.

I voted Female Characters in Video Games, Saddest Songs (because I don't think we did one for music outside of musical numbers, which are attached to other forms of media) and Fruits and Vegetables.

It was a toss up for me between Female Characters in Video Games and Mario Characters, so I decided to go with the former. Grrl power and what have you.

Fruits and Vegetables is always fun for me (I certainly prefer the former more due to my sweet tooth)

Horror Movies is a great topic I want to get to, but it's one of those topics I always want to save for near Halloween, since I like seasonal topics (I might be alone there).

Top Mecha... I kind of like mecha, but I always feels there's a level of nerdness I can't get into when people talk about what kind of guns they have and at what caliber they are. Good topic, but a little imposing. Oh and do EVAs count, because they are not actually mechanical, but giant monsters.

Numbers... I think there can be fun discussion there but it's not something I can get too excited about. Also, 69, dude!

Pokemon... I'm not really a pokemon guy. I played the first one and liked it. A few years ago on another list there was a Pokemon list and here was my entry:

1. Magikarp
2. Hitmonlee

That is all.

Saddest Songs... Interesting. But I think it needs a LOT of participants, as I'm sure there will be a lot of different tastes and answers, so much that a top 50 might be tricky. But I could be wrong. Also, I don't know what Falselogic intends to name it, but I pray it is related to a certain Mr. Show sketch.

Sporting Contest... not for me. I'm not a sports guy, unless it is sports in fiction (re: sports movies and manga). I'd even like to do top 50 sports, but sporting contests... maybe one or two. I guess I could include when my sister's best friend was in the Beijing Olympics. Oh, and when my sister was in the Canada games. Maybe I'll just have my sister about all the sports events she did and throw in that one Muhammad Ali fight he won with rope-a-dope. Anyway, if it wins, I'll be happy to read it.

Star Trek episodes... I need to watch more. I still think that even in a few months, "The Last Outpost" might be my #1 purely for its unintended hilarity.

Top 50 Video Games of the 21st Century. I guess I could participate, but I don't play video games nearly as often as I would like.

I thought of that, but since these things take a couple months it's tough to line it up perfectly. Where should Halloween fall? Nominations? The start of the list? The end?

I can't really get behind female game characters as a topic. I mean, it's a neat topic, don't get me wrong, but I feel like we already did it! I mean, yes, it was different (heroines), but like half the list was female game characters, IIRC. If it wins, I'm probably just going to copy and paste my list from that and then add the bottom half. Personally I'd rather do something that overlaps less with previous entries.

12 (out of 52). Though, if you count all characters that have been in video games, then it is probably around half.

Speaking of counting - would this only be for humanoid mechas? And what about ones that can act autonomously?

Right. when I stopped and thought about this I realized the "sad" songs I like are more along the lines of tragic or melancholy. Would those count?

This is actually what kept me from voting for Comics and Tabletop games initially because I don't really have in-depth experience with either. But after a while I decided Kirin and JBear deserved their shots and I'm glad I did because they've both been fun reads and I've learned a lot about comics and games I would never have known anything about otherwise.

I understand "this person hasn't run one yet" and "this person really wants to do this subject" aren't sufficient reasons for a lot of people to vote for a list, but even if usome of you are not big on Star Trek or new video games maybe you could give Red Hedgehog and myself our chances and you might end up enjoying the lists anyways.

And I promise that's all the lobbying I'll do this go-round.

I guess if you wanted to you could look at the previous 14-15 contests and see how long it took, on average, to get through the 5 steps of the process. (I don't want to.)
  1. Topic submissions*
  2. Topic voting / selection
  3. Nominations / individual list submissions
  4. Full list tallying/compilation (and additional optional work)
  5. Full list sequential reveal
*generally started about halfway through step 5.

Since it's certainly not going to win this round (there was so much other good stuff I didn't even end up voting for my own entry) I don't want to spend a lot of time on this right now, but... technically, the word "mecha" has it's origins in "mechanical design", which leans way towards an anything-goes approach, as long as it looks mechanical. That might end up just being too broad though, so I'd definitely give some further thought to what guidelines I'd want to lay down if it started looking like it was going to win at some point in the future.

Voted for 21st Century Video Games, Star Trek Episodes and Pokemon.

I hope Trek wins so I can be nice and grouchy that "The time Data became an evil cowboy" or "Holy crap! Space Lincoln!" Aren't the first and second placed episodes, respectively.

I picked top 50 Mario characters, fruits and vegetables, and horror movies.

I don't think I've even seen 50 horror movies, but I could still make a list!

I just mean these things take so long that it would be hard to get the perfect "timing" for a specific thematically appropriate time of the year.

Oh wow. One more vote each for Star Trek and 21st Century games and we have a 4 way tie.

Which... would be just about perfect really.

Please note that someone changed their vote (they did it anonymously through PM). So, as it stands, it is actually a tie between Mario Characters and 21st Century Video Games, though it is still VERY close between the top 4.

Also, I thought Mechagodzilla was just a robot. Did people drive him around in one of the movies?

Honestly if I were to run it eventually I'd probably include all those things. This is not it's time, though, and that's fine.
