Ah, this provides so much context to the cardboard crack comic.

Seems like a weird idea. As Shivam said, I'm pretty sure online commander was much more often 1 on 1 anyway, but if they are going to give it its own banlist and rules they should probably rebrand it.

Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed that they didn't even keep a paper analog (unless you want to just go on the honor system in classic, but half the value in MODO is telling me when I have an illegal card in my deck).

I'm fairly certain that's just because in the time you could play a 4-player game, you could get about five 1v1 games.

That doesn't mean that 1v1 is more popular, just that it's more common.

There’s a Magic: The Gathering MMORPG Video Game in the Works

Quote:
Now Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment are making a Magic: The Gathering “AAA RPG,” for console and PC, with release date and play details to be released at a later date. According to Comicbook.com, Cryptic’s CEO Stephen D’Angelo says the game’s play will not be “about the card game,” but rather inspired by the game’s setting, and I’m presuming, its well-known characters: “It’s about jumping into the world and the fiction of Magic: The Gathering,” D’Angelo said. The gameplay will “provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game’s worlds and characters through an entirely new lens.”
huh.

Very skeptical. I expect this will be a game riddled with microtransactions.

Isn't that basically how the IRL game operates now? Every pack you buy is another microtranscation.

The only MTG-based video game I'd be into would be Dominaria: Breath of the Wild.

Yes, but they're not trapped inside a virtual machine.

The Perfect World Entertainment all but guarantees that, they're one of the bigger purveyors of shovelware MMOs.

Cryptic made STO and Neverwinter. I never played them but isn't STO supposed to be solid for a F2P MMO? Don't know anything about Neverwinter.

They're both okay, but a lot of things like inventory capacity and under the hood stuff that gets more important the longer you play are tied into the cash shop or long grinds.

"Get 6 deck slots for free! Each additional deck costs $2, or $10 if you buy 6 at once!"

Wizards can't figure out how to make Magic relevant, drastically changes the release schedule again.

I don't know if I believe that Magic is irrelevant, hasn't it been doing increasingly well every year for ages?

In any case, looks like all (main line) sets are going to be large sets drafted alone (post Ixalan block)! Makes sense, all the favorite draft environments seem to be one set and that's always felt more robust to me.

I always thought getting rid of the Core Set was a big mistake, and apparently they're finally deciding to bring it back.

So I saw a leak/promo on Twitter for a new Commander card which was a spirit from Kamigawa. I then realized the only thing that could get me to pay back into Magic right now would be a Return to Kamigawa set. I know new Commander cards don't really mean anything about future plans, and I'm pretty sure Maro was on record saying a return to Kamigawa isn't much of a priority, but I still want it to happen.

I miss the Cold Snap era (though not Cold Snap itself) when Wizards had the confidence to just publish their sets however they like and however works best for the set and surprise us. I believe they stopped because they would get accountants questioning how during years they released core sets or more small ones they made less money/sold fewer cards, which is pretty dumb.

God yes. The one-two punch of Ravnica and Time Spiral was my favorite Standard. I remember it being both diverse and fun. I still have most of a White/Black midrange control deck from that era sitting in a box around here.

With regards to this announcement, I'm relieved that they're dialing back on the Gatewatch. It was getting pretty obnoxious. The cards were overwhelming Standard and the characters were cluttering up the story.

Ravnica was probably the only time they made A-B-C set drafting really good, though. It was lightning in a bottle and they've never been able to recreate it.

And Time Spiral, while old fans loved it, was largely kryptonite for new players. I do wonder if a return to Kamigawa would do better now, especially as it wouldn't need to be weak in power since it (hopefully) wouldn't come on the heals of an overpowered set.

Anyway, Magic is still doing pretty well - but not as well as it was doing three years ago which is part of the reason for this shakeup. Their main tournament format (Standard which is the most recent sets) has been kind of crap for awhile and that definitely needed fixing among some other issues.

Actually, thinking abotu Cold Snap as an example, they pretty much got that sprung on them as "Need a set here, please." like 3 months before it had to be done, right?

More the Shadowmore/Enevtide/Zendikar era. Though they did do Large/Small, Large blocks a lot.

Something like that. It's unclear exactly how much time they had, but it was sprung on them and that is why Coldsnap has the shortest design period for any set at 6 weeks. See #19.

I wonder if banning Aetherworks Marvel will solve the problem (spoilers: it won't).

Default Now if only Tamiyo would get her own feature set.

Guys, this is desperately important: the new set is Pirate Vraska Battles Dinosaurs.
